The Silhouette of Trees in the Dark
Laura Wilkinson
In the canyon, sitting among the silhouette of trees in the dark evokes the imagination.
The hue of a sunset lost creates a transformation,
the kind of change you palpate in the sounds and movements rising up,
as the darkness settles in.
The silhouette of trees in the dark is big and foreboding.
The distractions of sun, sky and canyon wall betraying their promise of always being familiar.
I light a match, but it's not the sun and I feel exposed,
the silhouette of trees in the dark stays present.
I draw to a shadow in the dark and sit to watch,
the memory of a previous day defining it,
waiting for the silhouette of trees in the dark,
to meet the first ray of dawn.
